What is the www.USAJOBS.com Website?

USAJobs (www.usajobs.com) is the Federal Government’s new official source for Federal government job listings, job applications, and employment information. It is intended to be a one-stop source for Federal jobs and employment information.

Once you have created a free account on the system you can execute several very important functions, such as:

  • Review resumes (can store up to 5) and supporting documents
  • Create and upload new documents and resumes
  • Amend your personal profile
  • Save jobs and searches
  • Review the status of previous vacancy applications
  • Create email alerts for saved searches

How do I do an Advanced search within www.usajobs.com

Once you are logged into the system, click on the ‘Advanced Search’ link under the ‘Where’ input box. You can now enter the criteria of the job you are searching for. You can enter search criteria such as:

  • Title
  • Keyword
  • Location
  • Agency/Sub Agency
  • Occupational Series

We recommend that you start off with a fairly generic search i.e. ‘Analyst’ in the ‘Keyword’ box and then use the filters on the left hand side of the window to refine your results.

The details that you see on the results screen can be expanded on by clicking ‘Quick View’ to see a condensed version of the vacancy announcement, or you can click on the ‘More Like This’ link to see similar job announcements (similar Titles, and similar Grades). To view the full job listing, click on the Title of the job, which is underlined to see complete details.

Using www.usajobs.com can I Save my Searches?

Yes, we’ve found one of the nicer features about www.usajobs.com is the fact that you can save your searches in your profile, and get updated via email when there are new matching jobs. Once you are signed into your account on the left hand side of the screen look for the Icon and “Saved Searches” text, click that once and you have the ability to ‘View’ your previously saved searches, ‘Create a new saved search’. If you choose to create a new saved search, fill in all the fields you want to query on (just like in the advanced search section above) and at the bottom of the form is space to give it a name. Do this, and you’ll then see the tick boxes to set it up so that you receive email notifications. I’d say choose daily, so that you can apply for the job as soon as it is posted.

In www.usajobs.com how do I upload my Resume?

Once logged into your account, on the left hand side of the window you can see a ‘Resumes’ section, click that to expand it and you have the ability to create a resume two ways:

  • By using the USAJOBS resume builder
  • By uploading a file stored locally

It’s important to remember that you can only store 5 resumes in the system.

If you choose to build a resume using the USAJOBS resume builder, it’s a fairly straight forward task, just follow all the detailed on screen instructions and work through page by page creating your resume.

If you want to upload a resume, the acceptable file formats for uploading are doc, docx, rtf, pdf, png, gif, jpg, jpeg. We thoroughly recommend using PDF as the preferred format, as you will not run into display issues by using a different version of Adobe reader. If you choose a Word format, depending on what is installed on the reviewing persons computer, it may look all messed up and not something you want to risk. You’ll also see there are links to preview a sample resume and some tips on what your resume should include, which are well worth looking at.

If you have any questions about using the www.USAJOBS.com website, then you should leave a comment for us below and see if we can help answer it.

Where do you find information regarding intern positions?

    • CPOL Admin May 13, 2012, 10:14 am

Hi Gary, use the keyword ‘intern’ when performing an advanced search on USAJOBS and it will bring back all the results which are for interns.

Were do I find information regarding security or a key word. looking for information for the Chemical Depot in Pueblo, CO. Finding it hard to navigate without the correct Key word. Thanks with any help.

Hi Dwayne, I’d suggest using the location as a keyword whilst searching, i.e. Pueblo – if you aren’t getting any results then maybe they aren’t actively recruiting at the moment.
