Civilian contractors are play a crucial part in supporting military and security operations around the world. Militaries, government civilian agencies, and many private companies with global operations depend on military contractors to carry out essential tasks that they cannot carry out on their own (or can do cheaper by outsourcing labor). These companies are usually employed by either civilian branches of governments, or by companies (often other contractors specializing in defense or technology) that are completing work in potentially unstable regions. These organizations depend upon private military contractors for facility security, personnel protection, body guard services, surveillance, intelligence gathering, translation, and intelligence analysis tasks. They often operate large fleets of vehicles, including armored personnel carriers, trucks, armored vehicles, helicopters, planes, and more recently, remotely operated vehicles (also known as drones).
Stable Employment in Unstable Environments
There are many reasons why contractors are employed in unstable areas, but usually they are employed for one of two reasons.
In the first instance, contractors are employed to provide expertise that governments or military agencies lack. This is often the case when they choose to employ the services of contractors that specialize in technology and weapons systems; contractors associated with these sorts of jobs will usually provide either highly-skilled labor services in the field (related to maintenance and construction), or will provide training to large groups of military or government personnel.
Secondly, military contractors are often deployed whenever governments, militaries, or companies know that contractor firms could do as good of a job or better than their own employees – and for less money. For instances, when it comes to training personnel with relatively new or advanced technologies, it usually makes more sense to hire a contractor firm to work on a “consultant” basis in order to carry out the training. This means that the organization hiring the contractors to consult will not need to spend money on the resources needed to keep their own staff capable of offering training services. This is also the case with private military corporations – for firms that specialize in things such as telecommunications or oilfield technology, it makes very little sense to spend money on recruiting, training, and equipping an in-house security force. After all, providing security services is not a core component of most companies’ missions. Hence, they often find that it is far more cost effective to leave security in the hands of experienced professionals with a long history of security missions.
Clarity and Conclusion
It is worth noting that private military corporations are often highly misunderstood. They are not “mercenaries”, in the sense that many individuals believe that they are. Contractors that work for private military corporations are not soldiers, and are not paid in order to fight in offensive maneuvers on the behalf of, or alongside uniformed military units. Instead, their job responsibilities are closer to the role that security guards play. Private military contractors are often highly experienced law enforcement or former military personnel, and may be suited up with body armor, tactical gear, and weapons, but they do not launch or participate in strikes against an enemy. Instead, they are most commonly used to provide escort, surveillance, and protective services to employees of government agencies or companies working in geopolitically unstable regions. Their primary motive is to deter aggressive action on the part of criminals, terrorists, or militants. They only respond to aggressors with gunfire in instances where they have been directly attacked or fired at; their role is limited to self defense and defense of property and persons.
